Emerald Carousel Barberry Rejuvenation Pruning

Emerald Carousel Barberry Rejuvenation Pruning
Emerald Carousel Barberry - Berberis thunbergii 'Emerald Carousel'

If you are looking for a beautiful shrub that will bring color to your garden in all four seasons, the Emerald Carousel Barberry is a great choice! This shrub has lovely yellow flowers in the spring, pleasant green foliage in the summer, orange and red foliage in the fall, and red berries that last through the winter. It is also a popular food source for birds.  The main draw back for Barberry shrubs are the thorns, and surprisingly, rabbits will chew back the stems in the winter. How the heck do they chew through those thorns? Fortunately, Emerald Carousel responds well to rejuvenation pruning when necessary, and the shrub will look fantastic the same season when the new growth emerges.  If you find that your Emerald Carousel Barberry needs rejuvenation pruning, don't worry - this can be done relatively easily with some basic tools. You will need:

  • Loppers
  • Hand pruner
  • Hedge shear
  • And especially,  a good pair of leather gloves

Barberry shrubs are popular because they come in many different varieties. You can find them with red foliage, yellow foliage, or a mix of both. They also come in many different sizes, ranging from 12 inches to 4 feet. If you're thinking of rejuvenating your Barberry shrubs, I would only do it to the larger varieties. The smaller dwarf varieties would best benefit from a light shearing each spring before bud break. This will help stimulate new growth for best leaf color and help them look their best.
