Three Great Spireas With Gold Leaves: Firegold, Goldmound & Double Play. Prune Them or Leave Them?
Firegold, Goldmound and Big Bang Double Play Spirea

Firegold Spirea is a beautiful plant with vibrant golden foliage that adds a touch of warmth and color to any garden. It is also relatively low maintenance and can thrive in various soil types and growing conditions. Additionally, it attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for gardeners.

Firegold Spirea is similar to the Bridal Wreath Spirea and typically grows to 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 meters) and a width of 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters).

Goldmound Spirea is a great shrub. It is known for its bright golden foliage and pink flowers and is easy to care for. Goldmound spirea typically grows around 2 to 3 feet tall and wide and is perfect where low maintenance is desired.

Double Play Big Bang Spirea is an excellent plant because it offers a long blooming season with beautiful, bright pink flowers and attractive foliage that changes color throughout the year. It is also low maintenance and can thrive in various soil conditions. It is excellent at drawing in the bumble bees.

I always recommend planting Spireas in a location with well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Spirea can tolerate pruning. Pruning is often recommended to maintain the plant's shape and promote new growth. It's best to prune spirea in the late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Just remember that a few Spireas bloom on old wood and take a year to set flower buds (like Firegold). If you prefer not to skip a year of blooms, it is best to prune those spireas directly after they have finished blooming (early summer).

Firegold, Goldmound, and Double Play Big Bang are three great golden yelow spireas with pink (or white) flowers. Find out if you should prune them or leave them.
